Shelter Program Receives $5,000 Grant

In December 2008, Hemispheres Arts Academy awarded a $5,000 grant to the St. John's Shelter Program for Women and Children to engage an Arts Program Facilitator to add performing arts to their curriculum, and to coordinate the entire Arts Program.

St. John’s Children’s Program is committed to providing every child that comes through its doors with an environment that fosters growth and promotes healing. Art is a wonderful opportunity for children to express themselves, and at the same time, it provides a healing experience.

Many of the youth at St. John's have a difficult time communicating with words and prefer to use fine art as a way of letting their case managers know how they feel. They participate in a journaling process with their case managers and often times they choose to use pictures as a way of communicating. The old saying goes “a picture is worth a thousand words”.

For children at St. John's Shelter, a picture is the start of a much needed conversation, a safe place to talk, and an opportunity to connect with a positive adult mentor. Hemispheres believes that engaging youth in art programs builds the self esteem and the self worth of each child. Performing Arts is another tool to use in engaging our youth-- within every child, a star can be born.
